Retargeting 101: Turning Website Visitors Into Buyers
Most people do not buy on the first visit. Here is how to bring them back with the right ad at the right time.
The number that surprises every business owner: more than 95% of the people who land on your site leave without buying on the first visit. It does not mean they are not interested — the moment just has not arrived yet. Retargeting is how you bring them back.
What retargeting is
Retargeting shows ads specifically to people who already visited you — viewed a product, added to cart, or read about the service. These are the warmest audiences you have, and therefore the most profitable to advertise to.
Why it works so well
- They already know you. No need to convince from scratch.
- High intent. Someone who added to cart nearly bought.
- Low cost, high conversion. Retargeting ROAS is almost always higher than cold campaigns.
How to build it right
Segment the audience by interest level: a homepage visitor gets a soft brand message; a cart abandoner gets a focused reminder, maybe a small incentive. The higher the interest, the more direct your offer can be.
A mistake to avoid
Do not chase the same people forever with the same ad. Set a sensible time window (say 14-30 days), refresh the creative, and exclude people who already bought. Good retargeting feels like a helpful reminder — not like being followed.
